Spear phishing campaign to trick you into buying gift cards for your supervisor or other campus leader

We are seeing a lot of spear phishing attempts trying to get employees to buy gift cards and send the codes to scammers.

The scam is usually from a gmail or other free email account that looks like your boss or another university leader. boss.uwgb@gmail[.]com or similar.
The first email asks if you are available to help with an urgent situation.  The email usually also states that they are in a meeting, seminar, or otherwise unable to talk other than through email or text message.
If you respond, the next message will start the request for purchase of gift cards, etc.

Please know that no manager or any other leader will have an request so urgent that it can't be verified with them in person or over the phone.
