Turning on Your Course's Media Gallery

The Media Gallery is a feature in Canvas that is hidden by default and must be manually added to your course's navigation menu. Perform the following steps to add Media Gallery to your course's navigation menu:

  1. In your course's navigation menu, select "Settings."
  2. Select the "Navigation" tab.
  3. Scroll down and find the Media Gallery item within the list of navigation items that are hidden from students, then click, drag, and drop it into the desired position within the list of active navigation items above.
  4. Select the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

You can find detailed information on editing your course navigation menu on this Canvas Instructor Guide page: How do I manage Course Navigation links?

Adding Media to the Gallery

Students and Teachers can add media to the course Media Gallery by performing the following steps in the Canvas course:

  1. Select the "Media Gallery" link in the course navigation menu to navigate to the course Media Gallery.
  2. Select the "Media" tab to enter the Media view that lists all media in the Media Gallery. If the Media Gallery does not contain any playlists, the Media view opens by default and this step may be skipped.
  3. Select the "+ Add Media" button. The Add Media interface will open and present you with the list of media in your personal My Media library.
  4. Place a check in the box next to each of the media items you would like to add to the Media Gallery, then select "Publish."
  5. You should see an "All media was published successfully" message at the top of the screen. The selected media are now published to the course Media Gallery. If you don't see the newly added media, try refreshing the page.

If the media you want to add to the Media Gallery isn't already in your personal My Media library, instead of checking boxes next to existing media items during step 4 of the above procedure, you can click Add New and select the desired option from the menu. Media added this way will automatically publish to the course Media Gallery and be available in your My Media library. Please see the page on My Media Video Recording for more information on adding media to your My Media library.

Configuring and Moderating the Gallery

Teachers can control the contents of the Media Gallery by deleting media from the gallery and turning on the "Moderate content" option, which requires all media submitted to the gallery to be approved by the teacher before it appears in the Media Gallery. Please see Kaltura's Manage a Media Gallery guide for information on editing Media Gallery settings and approving media submissions.

Using Playlists to Organize the Media Gallery

You can organize your Media Gallery by creating playlists and adding media from the gallery to them. Once you create the first playlist in a course Media Gallery, a new Home page/tab will appear and become the new landing page that users see after opening the gallery. The Home page consists of a collection of all of the playlists in a Media Gallery. You can leverage playlists to add organization to your gallery by creating playlists to house media by topic, assignment, group, or any structure you think is useful. Perform the following steps to create playlists and add media to them:

  1. Select the "Media Gallery" link in the course navigation menu to navigate to the course Media Gallery.
  2. Select the "Media" tab to enter the Media view that lists all media in the Media Gallery. If the Media Gallery does not yet contain any playlists, the Media view opens by default and this step may be skipped.
  3. Hover over the thumbnail of a media item, then, in the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail, select the "..." to reveal the media's option icons.

  6. Place a check in the box next to the name of each playlist you wish to add that media to, then select "Add."
