Creating Topics and Forums for Discussions in D2L

This document describes how to create topics and forums in D2L's Discussion tool.

To Create a New Forum:

1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.

2. Click on New - Forum.

3. Enter in a Title for the forum.

4. Set any forum options you want:

  • Select Create a new topic in this forum with the same title to automatically create a new topic with the same title as the new forum that is created.
  • Select Allow anonymous messages to allow anonymous messages to be posted to topics created within this forum. Anonymous messages are displayed with the message author 'Anonymous' in the Message List.
  • Select Messages must be approved before being displayed to require messages posted to topics created within this forum to be approved before they are displayed to all users in the Message List.
  • Under Availability, you can hide a forum, make a forum visible at all times during a course, or make the forum visible within date and time ranges.
  • Under Locking Options, you can set when the forum can be edited. When a forum is locked it is essentially "read-only."
5. Click the Save button or the Save& Add Topic button.

To Create a New Topic:

1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
2. Click on either the New - Topic

... or click on Add Topic from the drop-down box for the forum in which you want to create a topic.

3. Select the correct forum for the topic by clicking on the Forum drop-down list.
4. Enter in a Title for the topic.
5. Set any topic options you want:
  • Select Allow anonymous messages to allow anonymous messages to be posted to a topic. Anonymous messages are displayed with the message auther 'Anonymous' in the Message List.
  • Select Messages must be approved before being displayed to require messages posted to a topic to be approved before they are displayed to all users in the Message List.
  • Select A user must compose a message before participating in the topic to require users to post a message before they can read other users' messages.
  • Under Availability, you can hide a topic, make the topic visible at all times during a course, or make the topic visible within date and time ranges.
  • Under Locking Options, you can set when the topic can be edited. When a topic is locked it is essentially "read-only."
6. When clicking on the Assessment tab, you can assign the topic to a graded item in the grade book
