Dropbox Instructions for Students in D2L
This document discusses how students should use the dropbox tool in D2L to upload and submit papers for their courses in D2L.
Use the D2L Dropbox to submit assignments online. This document explains how to drop off an assignment and how to verify that it was received.
Types of files:
In most cases your document will be a Word file, but the Dropbox also handles Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and many other formats. Any questions concerning the type of file to be submitted should go to your instructor.
An important note about file names:
To be safe, file names should consist of letters (upper and lowercase), digits (numerals), a single period before the extension, and spaces (never two spaces in a row). Some characters always cause problems: single or double quotes, apostrophes, slashes, $, etc. Others sometimes do. Examples of safe file names include: FermatsTheorem.docx, My reaction paper.doc, Group5Report.pptx.
An important note on file sizes:
Files that contain images can be very large even though the document itself is only a few pages. PowerPoint files can be very large depending on how the images were added. Be aware that uploading large files can be very difficult from a computer with a slow Internet connection. The best solution is to resize images in an image-editing application, e.g., Photoshop, before inserting them into a document, or reduce image file sizes in PowerPoint.
To drop off a file:
- Logon to D2L and go to your class.
- Click on the Dropbox tool. Each assignment will have its own folder created by your instructor. Instructors typically assign start and end dates to dropbox folders to create a window of opportunity for students. Dropbox folders will not be accessible until the specified date and time, and students will not be able to drop off assignments after the assigned end date and time. Any questions pertaining to the start and end dates should be referred to your instructor.
- Click on the link for the appropriate dropbox folder.
- Click Add a File.
- Drag the file you want to upload into the window, or click on the Upload button (select the desired file and click Open). Make sure it's the correct file and that it was saved after the last changes were made.
- Add additional files if necessary.
- Click on the Done button.
- Add Comments, if necessary. Comments are optional, unless your instructor requires them..
- Click Submit to actually upload your files to the dropbox.

- Files can be very large, especially if they include graphics. Submitting a paper from a dialup connection at home might take several minutes or more. You might want to upload large files from on campus unless you have a fast connection or the file is reasonably small.
How to determine if your file(s) got through:
Students can check their Dropbox history at any time. Go to the Dropbox tool and click the History button. History lists all assignments that utilize the Dropbox and all the files you submitted. History also includes links to any feedback from the instructor. Note that not all instructors provide feedback in the Dropbox tool.
Students should also receive a confirmation email after successfully submitting documents in the dropbox.
