How to Claim a UWGB Domain

This document will go through the steps for how to claim a domain via UWGB.org. You have probably landed on this page because you are in one of the classes that is utilizing UWGB Domains this semester, but even if you're not in one of those classes, you can sign up here for your own domain and use these resources to help you build your own sites. If you've claimed a domain and are looking for next steps for setting it up with WordPress for an ePortfolio, scroll to the bottom of this page.

Choosing a Domain Name:

Choosing your domain name is the first step in getting started on with UWGB Domains. Your domain name is really just a unique Web address that can be used to build out your own digital presence. As you make your choice, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

The Sign-Up Process

Once you've thought about what you'd like for your domain name go to https://www.uwgb.org
Choose to "I'm here to claim a domain"

choose the option on the right

Click the "Get Started" Button to log in.

login using your campus credentials on this page

You will be redirected to the UWGB login page, where you will use your campus credentials:
Example: username: farleyk@uwgb.edu  | password: **********

Click "Login"

Enter your campus username and password, then click login

Next, you will be asked if you'd like to sign up with the free subdomain (default) or if you'd like to register your own domain for $15/year.
If you choose the free subdomain you may choose the first part of the subdomain name:
  • Example: katefarley.uwgb.org is a subdomain name
If you choose to register your own domain you may choose something like this:
  • Example: katefarley.org is a domain that I registered on my own, and am paying to own the domain name for $15/year

This is where you select your sub domain name

Once you "Click to Continue>>" you will be given a Review and Checkout screen, where you can select the button that says "Register Now."
This form auto-fills with your First and Last name, your email address, and the University's contact information.

Once you click "Register Now," this next step will create your cPanel, which is where you will be installing your web applications (like WordPress).

After the order is complete, the page will refresh to your Control Panel (cPanel).

At this point you can either decide to use your File Manager to host files that you write yourself, or use a content management system like WordPress, or Omeka.

Here are some helpful next steps:
  1. If you're interested in creating your own "site" from scratch you'll have to have some content knowledge of writing in a markup language (HTML) or other programming languages like PHP, Python, Javascript.
  2. If you decide to use WordPress as your content management system, you can use these instructions to install the application using the "Installatron"
  3. If you decide to use another content management system, and you've never used the Installatron, please email Kate Farley for more information: farleyk@uwgb.edu
