D2L Question Library

When creating quizzes and exams in D2L, it is recommended that instructors utilize the Question Library as the source for their questions.

Benefits to using the Question Library

  • Ability to randomize quizzes.
  • Reliable reusability of questions from semester to semester.
  • Ease of editing problem questions in one place and pushing the change to affected quizzes.
  • Ability to use review questions on quizzes and quiz questions on exams, etc.
  • Easier to organize.
  • Group questions by theme, topic, unit, or chapter.
  • Allows for flexibility between semester to keep things "fresh."

Accessing the Question Library

Get to the question library by clicking "Quizzes" in the navbar and then selecting "Question Library" at the top.

Creating new sections

Choose how you would like to organize your sections. Consider organizing your sections by topic, chapter, unit, etc. Consider that you can pull in an entire section when creating randomized quizzes so "banks" of questions you intend to randomize should be kept together. Note that you can create sections within sections just like folders. While it is possible, it is not advisable to create questions directly in the question library without putting them in sections.
To create a new section:
  1. Access the Question Library
  2. Navigate to the location where you would like to create the section (the Question Library itself or another section)
  3. Click New and choose Section
  4. Provide a section name and then click Save

Creating individual questions in a section

To add (individual) questions to a Section:
  1. Access the Question Library and navigate to the location where you would like to create the question
  2. Click New at the top and select your question type
  3. Provide the settings required by your question type and then click Save -- NOTE: Click "Save and New" to save the current question and immediately create another of the same type.

Bulk importing questions

You can bulk import questions into a Question Library section by using the D2L Question Import Tool provided by UW-Madison. Information about this tool is available here: https://kb.wisc.edu/luwmad/page.php?id=41417
Once you have downloaded the tool and used it to create a CSV version of your question set import it into your section:
  1. Access the Question Library and navigate to the location where you would like to import the questions
  2. Click Import at the top
  3. Under "Import Source" select "From a D2L Text Format File" then click Choose File under Source File
  4. Browse for and open the CSV created by the D2L Import Tool
  5. Click Save
  6. Review and edit as necessary the imported questions

Moving questions around the library

To move a question or set of questions:
  1. Navigate to the question's current/old location
  2. Check the boxes next to the questions you would like to move
  3. Click the "Move" button either at the top or the bottom of the page
  4. Click the new location in the list provided -- NOTE: clicking moves the questions immediately; you are not given a confirmation step.

Moving sections around the library

To move a section or set of sections:
  1. Navigate to the section's current/old location (this may be the root of the question library)
  2. Check the boxes next to the sections you would like to move
  3. Click the "Move" button either at the top or the bottom of the page
  4. Click the new location in the list provided -- NOTE: clicking moves the questions immediately; you are not given a confirmation step.

Using (and re-using) questions in the question library

When in the "Add/Edit Questions" step of quiz creation, simply choose "Import" rather than "New." Under Import Source, choose "From and Existing Collection." Under Source Collection, choose "Question Library." Then choose the section you would like to pull from under "Source Section" and check the boxes next to the questions you'd like to use.
TIP: Select "Collection Root" under Source Section and then expand the sections you'd like to pull from to pull from multiple sections all at once. This comes in handy when repurposing questions for a final exam or re-using review questions on a quiz.
