Kaltura CaptureSpace Lite

This document is an overview and getting started guide for using the CaptureSpace Lite desktop recorder.

Downloading the CaptureSpace Lite Desktop recorder

  1. Navigate to https://media.uwgb.edu and log in (click the profile icon/menu in the upper right) with your campus username and password (you can also access this page by logging into D2L and from the homepage clicking Kaltura and selecting Media Management Portal).
    login
  2. Click the "Add New" dropdown and select "Recording"
    addnew
  3. Kaltura will prompt you to download the recorder application if you have not previously done so. Click either "Download for Windows" or "Download for Mac" depending on your current system. Once you download this app, you will come back to this webpage every time you wish to launch the app and make a recording.
    • WINDOWS: Proceed with saving and running the .exe file to install the program. How this works on your computer will depend on your web browser and download settings.
    • MAC: Proceed with saving and running the .dmg file to install the program. How this works on your computer will depend on your web browser and download settings. You will likely need to drag the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder icon onto the Applications folder when prompted.
      winmac
  4. To verify installation, repeat steps 1 and 2 above. You should be prompted by your web browser to launch the desktop application rather than download (NOTE: the download page may still display). Choose to launch the desktop application to proceed to making a screen or webcam recording.

  4. Under the "Record" tab, choose the type of recording you would like to do
    whatrecord  countdown
    • Screen: You will be provided with the option to record the full screen (and which screen to record if multiple are detected) or to record a selected area.
      • If you have selected a screen a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
      • If you have selected "Select Area" a Select Area button will appear. Use it to select your area by clicking and dragging from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the area you would like to record. Once you have done so, a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
    • Screen & Webcam: This has the same settings as "Screen" above but will add a smaller window to your screen which displays your webcam. This smaller screen can be resized and moved within the recording area to include your webcam in the recording.
    • Webcam: This will record your webcam and microphone only. As soon as you click "Webcam" a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
    • Voice: This will record only audio from your microphone. As soon as you click "Webcam" a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
  5. When you are finished making your recording, click the CaptureSpace icon in your taskbar and choose "Done"
    • Windows Users: Clicking the CaptureSpace icon may not show the "done" option if you are using the screen/webcam recorder. You may need to select "Recording Screen Capture" to choose the correct "Window" and then click "Done"
  6. Your recording will process and a preview will open. Use the "Trim" and "Chop" features to cut off the ends or cut out the middle respectively. When finished click Done
  7. If you've made changes, you'll be asked if you would like to "Edit original recording" or "Create new recording"
    • Edit original: Replaces the temporary video file with a new file complete with any changes (trims, chops, titles) you have made.
    • Create new: Makes a copy of the temporary video file complete with any changes (trims, chops, titles) you have made (takes more space).
  8. Provide a title for your video (REQUIRED), description (optional), and tags (optional). NOTE: These can all also be changed later.
    • Students: Your instructor may request that your video include a particular tag or tags so that he or she can find it for an assignment. Be sure to check with your instructor.
  9. Click Upload
  10. Close CaptureSpace once you receive the confirmation message complete with the link to my-media.

Recovering a recording after failed upload

Method 1 (Windows or Mac)

  1. Launch CaptureSpace Lite and click on the "Library" tab
  2. Hover over the video you would like to recover and click the Edit/Pencil icon
    editsaved
  3. Follow steps 6-10 under "Creating a recording" above

Method 2: Windows

  1. Turn on the Windows setting to "Show hidden files." You may need to consult your computer's help documentation to learn how to do this. For Windows 7 and later try: clicking on the Start menu and then searching "Hidden files." You're looking to enable an option to "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
    showhidden
  2. Use your file explorer to navigate to your hard drive (usually labeled "C:/") and then Users, your username (on a campus computer this will be your uwgb username), AppData (this folder will be lighter in color as it is a shown 'hidden' folder), Local, Kaltura
  3. Browse this location for your video file in MP4 format. The name of the file may resemble: kaltura.encode.mp4.ns.mp4
  4. Save this file somewhere easier to find and then go to https://media.uwgb.edu and choose "Media Upload" from the "Add New" dropdown.

Method 2: Mac

  1. Open My Finder (the square face icon in the taskbar)
  2. Press Command + Shift + G simultaneously to open the search folders box and search for "~/Library" (without quotes) and click Go
  3. Open the Kaltura folder
  4. Browse this location for your video file in MP4 format. The name of the file may resemble: kaltura.encode.mp4.ns.mp4
  5. Save this file somewhere easier to find and then go to https://media.uwgb.edu and choose "Media Upload" from the "Add New" dropdown.

Considerations

  • If you do not have a lot of space on your computer, you may wish to launch CaptureSpace and go to the Settings tab where you can check the option to "Delete recordings on disk after upload" which will delete the temporary video files once your recording(s) are in the cloud.
  • Your web browser and pop-up / configuration settings may impact Kaltura functionality. Be on the lookout for icons indicating this behavior in or around your address bar. Icons like locks, eyes, shields, Xs, an exclamation points generally indicate these features. In many cases, clicking one of these icons will provide you with more information and/or further options.
  • Chrome or Firefox are recommended browsers for using Kaltura
  • The file recovery processes provided here work often, but if the preview screen/uploading screen is closed out before the encoding process has started, or partially finished, that also cancels the temporary file made in these folders and recovery is impossible.
  • Be sure to create Kaltura recordings with a strong internet connection in order to prevent upload issues. If your upload is delayed or the encoding process is interrupted, videos may be lost.
  • If you change your "Local Media Files Storage" location under the Settings tab of CaptureSpace Lite, you will need to navigate to that location instead of the location listed under "Recovering a recording after failed upload" Method 2: Windows, Step 2, or Method 2: Mac, Steps 2-3.
  • Longer videos take longer to upload.
  • It is good practice to keep videos under 10 minutes in length.
