How to Make a Contact Page in WordPress

This document walks users through how to create a page where someone can "email" you from your portfolio.

Part of having a portfolio is giving your audience a way to get in touch with you (and since you don't have that kind of information on your digital résumé for web safety reasons: phone number, home address)--we can make a page that encourages people to get in touch with you.

From your Dashboard >>  Choose Plugins

plugin

Click "Add New"

add new plugin button

Search the plugins library, search for "Contact Form 7" and then choose the one by Takayuki Miyoshi. This is a good one to install because it has been updated recently, it is compatible with my version of WordPress, and a lot of people have installed this plugin. That means:
  1. It'll be well documented (because a lot of people have installed it).
  2. It'll be updated regularly
  3. It'll be easy to find resources about how to use it

Make sure to click "Install Now" and then click "Activate:"

click activate

Go back to your Plugins menu to ensure that your new plugin is there:

To change the form or settings for the form click, "Settings"

click settings

To change the email address that the form sends to, click the "Mail" tab:

click on the mail tab

In the "To" field, enter a different email address, and click Save.

Once you've finished changing the email to one of your choice, copy the shortcode (This shortcode, will reference the "form" once you've put the short-code on a page or a post). The shortcode is in the blue rectangle.

Now that you have the plugin, and the "form" is set the way you want, you have to create a page that can act as the public version of the form. So, click on the Pages tab in the Dashboard, and choose "Add New:"

add new page

  1. Add a page title,
  2.  Switch to the text view,
  3. Paste in the shortcode,
  4. Then click Publish.

Now that you have the page, you have to make it accessible to your audience.

Navigate to the Appearance >> Menu area in the Dashboard, so that you can add the page to the menu.

menu

  1. Tick the box next to the newly created page called "Contact"
  2. Click Add to Menu >> Move the page where you want it to be in order (click on the page, and it'll turn the cursor into the four directional arrow, then it'll put a dotted-rectangle around the area the page will sit)
  3. Click Save

View the live version of the page, and test it out.
