Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication - Setting up Security Methods

This document details for students how to set up security methods for Microsoft's Multi-factor Authenticator (MFA).

When trying to log into Microsoft related products for the first time after the MFA is activated, you will be prompted with the following screen:

1. Select Next to move forward with setting up your security methods to better secure your Microsoft account. 

2. The security verification method options will be listed as in the photo below. The options available are Phone Authentication and Mobile App Authentication - NOTE: Office Phone is no longer available, do not select this option. 

3. Select Phone Authentication or Mobile App Authentication.

When you select the phone authentication, follow these steps:

1. Select the correct country or region and enter the desired mobile phone number for authentication.

2. Next, select one of the methods below to be used for phone authentication:

a. Call meWhen selected, you will receive a phone call. When answered, you will be prompted to select certain digits on your phone dial to approve the sign-in.

b. Send me a code by text message - When selected, you will receive a text with a verification code. You will be prompted to enter the verification code to approve sign-in.

When you select the mobile app authentication, follow these steps:

1. Select one of the following methods: Receive notifications for verification or Use verification code.

a. When you select Receive notifications for verification you will be prompted to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. Follow our KB Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication - Setting up the Mobile App to successfully set up the app. After the setup, the Authenticator app will send a notification to approve a sign-in.

b. When you select Use verification code you will be prompted to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.  Follow our KB Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication - Setting up the Mobile App to successfully set up the app. After the setup, a six-digit code will be listed under your account in the Authenticator App. Type in the code to approve the sign-in. 


After this setup, you will be prompted to add an additional authentication method. If you are not prompted, go to My Sign-Ins to add a second authentication method to your account. Multiple authentication methods are encouraged in case access to an authentication method is lost (i.e. lose your phone).
