How to create a new VirtualBox VM

This document details how to set up a new virtual machine in Oracle's VirtualBox product.

***NOTE: On campus we have VirtualBox installed on the workstations in MAC-122.***


Set Up:

1. Launch Oracle VirtualBox.

2. Select the "New" VM button.

Click new





3. Give your VM a name and select the OS type and distribution from the drop down menus.

4. Allocate the needed about of RAM to your VM. Oracle VirtualBox provides a guideline about what is recommended, however more RAM will help performance.

5. Create a hard drive for your VM by selecting the radial button to "Create," and advancing to the next step.

6. You will now be able to chose what type of virtual disk file you wish to create. VDI will be the default, however that is more specific to Oracle VirtualBox. If you wish to use this file with other virtualization applications (ex: VMware) the file type VMDK will work for both Oracle and VMware platforms. Select whatever file type applies to your usage.

7. Oracle VirtualBox will now ask about what disk allocation you wish to use. Select "Dynamically allocated."

8. Select the yellow path search folder. Then save your VM disk file to the "virtual-machines" folder on the root of the C:/ drive.

9. Ensure that your VM disk file is going to the C:/ folder.

10. With your Virtual Machine created we will now need to adjust it's settings to give it a boot disk and network connection. To do this select the orange settings gear with your Virtual Machine selected.

11. In the storage settings select a ISO file or insert a disk to boot to. Note: To select a ISO file click the CD icon in the upper right part of the window, and then browse for the file.

12.) This step CAN NOT be skipped when configuring on a Campus workstation. In the network section adjust the attached to adapter to "Bridged Adapter", and ensure that it is using the adapter named "VLAN: NETUSR84". When done with that click "OK" to confirm your settings.

13. Power on your VM.
