Restricting Access to Discussion Forums and Topics in D2L

This document details how to restrict access to forums and topics in the Discussion tool of D2L.

Hiding a Forum or Topic

1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
2. Click the drop-down arrow for the forum and then choose Edit Forum.

3. Under Availability click on the Show forum visibility options or Show topic visibility options links to see the options if they're hidden.
4. Select the option that you want.
5. Click the Save button.

Locking a Forum or Topic

1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
2. Click the drop-down arrow for the forum and then choose Edit Forum.

3. Under Locking Options click on the Show locking options link to see the options if they're hidden.
4. Select the option that you want.
5. Click the Save button.

Adding Release Conditions to a Forum or Topic

1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
2. Click the drop-down arrow for the forum and then choose the Edit Forum icon.

3. Click on the Restrictions tab.
4. Click on Show Forum Release Conditions or Show Topic Release Conditions if the controls in the
Release Conditions section are not visible.
5. If you already created a release condition elsewhere you can attach it to the forum or topic by clicking on the Attach Existing link. Select the condition you want and then click on Attach.
If you want to add a new release condition that doesn't exist, click on Create and Attach. Enter in the details for the new release condition, then click on Create.
6. Click the Save button.

Removing Release Conditions from a Forum or Topic

  1. Follow the Add a Release Condition steps 1-4 above.
  2. Click the Remove Condition icon next to each condition that you want to remove or to remove all conditions, click the Remove All Conditions icon at the top of the list conditions.
  3. Click the Save button.

Restrict a Single Forum or Topic to a Group

  1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow for the forum or topic and then choose the Edit Forum or Edit Topic links.
  3. Click on the Restrictions tab.
  4. Click on the Show Forum Group Restrictions or Show Topic Group Restrictions if the controls in the Group Restrictions section are not visible.
  5. Select Restrict this forum to the following groups or Restrict this topic to the following groups.
  6. Click the Add Groups button.
  7. Select a Group Category.
  8. Select the groups or topics.
  9. Click Add.
  10. Click on the Save button.

To Restrict Topic Access by Group

  1. Click on Discussions in the navigation bar.
  2. Click on the Group Restrictions tab just under the navigation bar.

    In the example below, 3 groups have already been created. Only Group 1 and the instructor have access to the Question 1 Topic. Group 2 has access to both the Question 2 Topic and Question 3 Topic. Group 3 also has access to the Question 3 Topic. No one except the instructor has access to the Question 4 Topic.
