Creating Dropbox Categories and Folders in D2L

This document outlines how to create categories and folders in the dropbox tool of D2L.

Dropbox categories and folders

Dropbox categories are a way to organize your dropbox folders in the dropbox tool. Dropbox categories are a feature the instructor to organize your dropbox folders. Categories are not required. Dropbox folders are the actual place where students submit their work.

Creating a dropbox category

  1. Click on New Folder
  2. Click on the New Category link. Categories allow you to organize your course dropboxes.
  3. Type in a name for the new category. Click the Save button.
  4. Do one of the following after creating a new category:
  5. Click the New Category link again to create another category.
  6. Fill in the New Folder page to create a new folder inside the category.  (See Creating a dropbox folder, pg. 2, for instructions on creating a new folder)
  7. Click on the Cancel button if you do not wish to create a new dropbox folder and want to return to the main Dropbox folders page.

Creating a dropbox folder

  1. Click on Dropbox in the navigation bar
  2. Click on New Folder.
  3. In the Name field, type in a name for the folder.
  4. Choose a Folder Type:
  5. Individual submission folder – Select this option if you want each student to submit their own assignment and are assessed individually.
  6. Group submission folder – Select this option if you want to have a group member submit an assignment. All group members are assigned a common grade.
  7. You can assign the folder to a Category by selecting the Category drop-down list or click the New Category link to create a new category.
  8. Assign the folder with a Grade Item, by selecting the Grade Item drop-down list or click the New Grade Item link to create a new grade item.
  9. Type how many points that the dropbox item is worth by typing in the point value in the Out Of field.
  10. Add or create a Rubric if desired.
  11. Add any instructions about the assignment in the Instructions text box.
  12. Attach any files or audio that you want by clicking on the Add a File or Record Audio buttons.
  13. Click on the Save button.

To set the availability dates for a folder:

  1. Click the Restrictions tab.
  2. Set the appropriate dates and times.
  3. Click the Save button.

To set release conditions for a folder:

  1. Click the Restrictions tab.
  2. If you already created a release condition elsewhere you can attach it to the dropbox by clicking on the Attach Existing link.  Select the condition you want and then click on Attach. If you want to add a new release condition that doesn’t exist, click on Create and Attach.  Enter in the details for the new release condition, the click on Create.
  3. Click the Save button.

To add special permissions:

  1. Click the Restrictions tab.
  2. Select either of the following:
  3. Allow users with special access to submit assignments outside the normal availability dates for this folder
  4. Only allow users with special access to see this folder
  5. Click the Add Users to Special Access button.
  6. Select the Date Availability that you want for the special access students.
  7. Select the boxes next the appropriate students’ names.
  8. Click the Save button.
