Using Windows Explorer with OneDrive

Getting Started Quicklinks: Using Windows Explorer with OneDrive-UWGB (A.K.A. WebDAV).

IMPORTANT: This process is different than syncing--this process is not syncing files but is instead working with copies of these documents. Windows Explorer can be best used to save a copy of a document onto your machine, work on it, and upload a new or revised copy.

*NOTE: This feature is only available in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows PCs.

Occasionally, you will want to drag and drop an entire folder or several documents to or from one drive the same way you might with files on your machine. You can do this by opening a Windows Explorer folder (you might also know this as the file/folder browser or "my computer").

  1. Log in to the OneDrive web interface*.
  2. Navigate to Library options by clicking the Library tab in the upper left-hand corner.

  3. The "Open with Explorer" button can be found under "Connect & Export." (This will be shaded/greyed out if this feature is not available in your browser or on your machine*.) Note: You may only the screen and folder button (with no label) depending on the size of your browser window.

  4. Click this to open a new explorer window on machine showing your OneDrive files and folders (the window on the right in the example below). You can then drag files from another window (one the left below) to OneDrive. You can also drag files from OneDrive onto your computer.
