Use the Media Library

A Media Library is a storage area for the files you want to host on the internet. Using the Media libraries application, you can store various files, for example, photos, images, zip files, presentations or document files. In order for them to be accessed by web visitors, you must upload these files from your hard drive to the server.

No Need to Create a Media Library

You shouldn't need to create a media library. The media library for your site should already exist. All media libraries in the old Kentico 12 system were bulk imported into Kentico Xperience 13. Any time our web experts create a new site, they also create a media library with the same name as the site. If your site has been renamed since 2015, your media library may have a name that's different from the name of your site.

Locate a Media Library

  • Open the Media libraries application.
  • Use the page navigation at the bottom of the screen to find your media library in the alphabetical list.

Pin your media library to your Dashboard for fast access to it in the future. With your media library open, look for the thumbtack icon in the gray navigation banner at the top of the page to the right of your media library’s name. Select the outlined thumbtack icon to toggle it solid. Once it’s solid, there will be a tile for this media library when you go to your Dashboard.

Upload a File to a Media Library

  • Click the green pencil icon to enter the media library into which you want to upload files.
  • Click the folder into which you want to upload the file.
  • Click Upload.
  • Choose the files you want to upload and click Open. You can select multiple files at once.

Once you upload the file, you will see it in your selected folder. You can preview files at the bottom of the window - under the File tab.

Create a Folder in a Media Library

It's a good practice to organize your media library files into folders.

  • In the Media library content tree on the left, select the parent folder under which the new folder should be placed.
  • Click the plus sign (+) on the top left of the screen. A new folder dialog box opens.
  • Fill in the folder name.

The name cannot contain spaces or special characters, and it must use letters A-Z, numbers 0-9, hyphens, and underscores.

  • Click Save.

Edit Files in Media Library

You can make images edits or update the file name of files in the media library.

  • Open the Media libraries application.
  • Click the green pencil icon for the Media library that contains the files that you want to edit.
  • Click the file that you want to edit.
  • Click the green pencil icon for a file. If you’re editing an image file, an Edit image dialog opens. Otherwise, an Edit metadata dialog opens.
  • Edit the file.
  • Click Save & Close to apply the changes that you made.

Copy or Move Media Library Files

  • Open the Media libraries application.
  • Click the green pencil icon for the Media library that contains the files that you want to copy or move.
  • Click the files that you want to copy or move. To select files, enable the check box next to the files. If you want to copy or move all the listed files, leave the check boxes disabled.
  • In the first drop-down list under the listed files, choose whether you want to perform the action on Selected files or All files. (You may need to scroll down to the bottom of the files to see this.)
  • In the second drop-down list, choose Copy or Move.
  • Click OK. The Copy/Move files dialog opens.
  • Click the folder into which you want to copy or move the files.
  • Click Copy/Move.

Delete Files in the Media Library

  • Open the Media libraries application.
  • Click the green pencil icon for the Media library that contains the files that you want to delete.
  • Click  the red trash can icon next to the file that you want to delete.
  • OR. Select the files that you want to delete. To select files, enable the check box next to the files. Scroll down to the second drop-down list under the files to click Delete. Then click OK.
