Support for Third-party VPN Products
Summary: Disable third-party VPN products if you experience problems connecting to university resources.
Third-party Virtual Private Network (VPN) products, such as TorGuard, CyberGhost, TunnelBear, and ExpressVPN, have become a common method used to hide a user’s identity online. VPN’s aims to provide anonymity by routing internet traffic through multiple connections, many of which are based in foreign countries.
Due to the anonymizing nature of these tools, many VPN’s connections are rejected by most websites that have security in place to require identifying information; for example, email accounts, bank accounts and credit card accounts. In addition, UWGB also requires ‘identity’ information when users are accessing university resources such as Library databases (EZ Proxy) and Remote Lab / Remote Desktop. Therefore, if you are trying to connect to a university resource and are experiencing issues, please try disabling your VPN.
Information Technology staff are unable to provide support for third-party VPN tools aside from disabling them to verify connectivity.
How to temporarily disable a VPN connection:
Highlight the icon for the VPN service you want to disable. Click on the "Change settings of this connection" link in the Network Tasks list on the left side of the window. Go to the Networking tab at the top of the window and click on the Uninstall button. Press Yes to confirm your decision to disable the VPN service.
