Instructor Guide to Adding Kaltura My Media to D2L Course Content

This document will show you how to add Kaltura My Media videos to your D2L course Content area through the Add Existing Activities button.

There are two benefits to using this process in place of older methods.
  1. Faster. No need to select New->Create a File->Insert Stuff->My Media
  2. Allows for Kaltura video creation within the process, instead of launching CaptureSpace Lite desktop recorder through My Media or the Media Management Portal.

Adding Existing Videos

  1. Enter the D2L course that you’d like to add the existing video to.
  2. Click on Content in the navbar.
  3. Click on the module (e.g. Week 1, Unit 1, Videos, etc.) that your video should be located in. Modules are the containers/folders/organizational units on the left-hand side of Content.
  4. Click on the Add Existing Activities button and select Kaltura My Media.
  5. Scroll through the list of videos to find your video, or enter part of its name in the Search Media box. Click on the corresponding blue Select button for the video you’d like to add.

  6. The video will now be added to Content. The default video name it was given when uploading/recording the video.

To rename the video, click on the caret and choose Edit Properties in Place. You can then click on the name, and type what you’d like to replace it.

  5. Click the Add New button and select Recording.

If you've already used the CaptureSpace Lite recorder to make desktop recordings, skip down to step 6.

Kaltura will prompt you to download the recorder application if you have not previously done so. Click either "Download for Windows" or "Download for Mac" depending on your current system. Once you download this app, you will come back to this webpage every time you wish to launch the app and make a recording.
    • WINDOWS: Proceed with saving and running the .exe file to install the program. How this works on your computer will depend on your web browser and download settings.
    • MAC: Proceed with saving and running the .dmg file to install the program. How this works on your computer will depend on your web browser and download settings. You will likely need to drag the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder icon onto the Applications folder when prompted.

Once the recorder is installed, click on the back arrow...

... and then Kaltura My Media again. You should now be prompted by your web browser to launch the desktop application rather than download (NOTE: the download page may still display). Choose to launch the desktop application to proceed in making a screen or webcam recording.
  6. If using a webcam and/or microphone, click the "Settings" tab and verify that the correct inputs are selected and working properly.
  7. Under the "Record" tab, choose the type of recording that you would like to do.

    • Screen: You will be provided with the option to record the full screen (and which screen to record if multiple are detected) or to record a selected area.
      • If you have selected a screen, a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
      • If you have selected "Select Area," a Select Area button will appear. Use it to select your area by clicking and dragging from the upper-left corner to the lower-right corner of the area you would like to record. Once you have done so, a five-second countdown will begin. The recording will start after the countdown reaches 1 (0 but not displayed).

    • Screen & Webcam: This has the same settings as "Screen" above but will add a smaller window to your screen which displays your webcam. This smaller screen can be resized and moved within the recording area to include your webcam in the recording.
    • Webcam: This will record your webcam and microphone only. As soon as you click "Webcam" a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
    • Voice: This will record only audio from your microphone. As soon as you click "Webcam" a five-second countdown will begin and the recording will start.
  8. When you are finished making your recording, click the CaptureSpace icon in your taskbar and choose Done
    • Windows Users: Clicking the CaptureSpace icon may not show the "done" option if you are using the screen/webcam recorder. You may need to select "Recording Screen Capture" to choose the correct "Window" and then click Done
  9. Your recording will process and a preview will open. Use the "Trim" and "Chop" features to cut off the ends or cut out the middle respectively. When finished click Done
  10. If you've made changes, you'll be asked if you would like to "Edit original recording" or "Create new recording"
    • Edit original: Replaces the temporary video file with a new file complete with any changes (trims, chops, titles) you have made.
    • Create new: Makes a copy of the temporary video file complete with any changes (trims, chops, titles) you have made (takes more space).
  11. Provide a title for your video (REQUIRED), description (optional), and tags (optional). NOTE: These can all also be changed later.
    • Students: Your instructor may request that your video include a particular tag or tags so that he or she can find it for an assignment. Be sure to check with your instructor.
  12. Click Upload.
  13. Close CaptureSpace Lite once you received the confirmation message.
  14. Click on the back arrow...

... and then Kaltura My Media again.
  15. Click the blue Select button for the recording you just made.
  16. The video will now be added to Content with the default video name it was given when uploaded/recorded.

To rename the video, click on the caret and choose Edit Properties in Place. You can then click on the name, and type what you'd like to replace it with.
