The Digital Learning Environment (DLE)

The "Digital Learning Environment" (DLE) is a suite of tools uses for online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. It is the "digital" portion of the teaching and learning experience. This document provides some information and, in many cases, links to other resources regarding the various piece of the DLE.

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL)

While the Help Desk ( 920.465.2309 | helpdesk@uwgb.edu ) and Information Technology offer technical support for a wide range of technologies and tools, the Center manages the over-arching philosophy surrounding the DLE. The staff in CATL are ready and willing to work with any instructors who would like to make the most effective use of it.

Learning Management System (LMS)

The LMS makes up the largest piece of the DLE pie. Currently UWGB (and the majority of UW-System) uses Desire2Learn (D2L) as the LMS. This platform hosts course materials, quizzes, drop-boxes, discussion boards, and more for online and blended learning in various capacities. In the coming months, UWGB will transition (along with the rest of the UW System) to a new platform known as Canvas.

A Domain of One's Own (Domains)

The "A Domain of One's Own" service is offered by Reclaim Hosting who "provides educators and institutions with an easy way to offer their students domains and web hosting that they own and control. Our goal is to make the process of offering a flexible web space and domain name to your students as easy as possible and giving you the support you need to make it all happen." UWGB is a part of this. Students an instructors should contact Kate in CATL to learn more.

Kaltura and CaptureSpace Lite

Kaltura is the System-hosted video platform (similar to YouTube). This platform is in many ways meant to be an "in-house" equivalent to services like YouTube and Vimeo. One primary advantage to Kaltura is the ease with which instructors can make and post videos. It also integrates directly into the LMS (see above). CaptureSpace Lite is the Kaltura desktop application used to create screen recordings, webcam videos, etc.

The Student Information System (SIS), Email, Qualtrics, and other services...

While other services like SIS and Email are not directly a part of the LMS, they are certainly a part of the ecosystem known as the "DLE." As with anything within the DLE, the best place for technical support varies depending on the service and the level of complexity. For technical assistance the Help Desk is the best place to start. For questions regarding effective uses in education, integration of tools into the curriculum, and best practices for teaching and leaning using these tools, please do not hesitate to contact CATL.
