Kaltura (Captioning) - Adding and Editing Machine Captions

Kaltura is the video portal for instructors, students, and staff across the University of Wisconsin System. Adding captions (text of the audio) is a key part of complying with federal regulations about video accessibility and it makes your videos more useful for all users. We strongly encourage users to add captions to all of their Kaltura videos. The new Canvas-integrated instance of Kaltura has tools to easily produce automated, machine-generated captions. This service is available at no additional charge.

Here is how you request machine-generated captions for your videos:

The quality of machine captions isn't great, so you have to manually correct them. Kaltura provides tools to allow you to easily edit your videos' captions.

If you would prefer human-generated captions, University of Wisconsin institutions have access to a contract with two captioning vendors for human-generated captions at a reasonable per-minute rate. Each video owner or their department is responsible for securing funding to pay for this.
